Why is an IEC (Importer Exporter Code) needed in India?

An IEC is a mandatory 10-digit code required for anyone involved in the import or export of goods in India. It is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

You cannot legally import or export goods commercially without it. It's also required for customs clearance, shipping, and receiving payments from (or sending payments to) foreign banks.

What are the main documents required for import-export in India?

Besides the IEC, the most common documents are:

  • Bill of Lading / Air Waybill: A transport document issued by the carrier.

  • Commercial Invoice cum Packing List: A combined document with details of goods, price, and packing.

  • Bill of Entry: Filed by the importer for customs clearance.

  • Shipping Bill: Filed by the exporter for customs clearance.

  • Certificate of Origin: Certifies the goods' country of origin, often needed for trade agreements.

Why is India a good destination for import and export business?

India offers several advantages, including a large and growing domestic market, a strategic geographic location connecting the East and West, and a skilled workforce at competitive costs.

Government initiatives like 'Make in India' and various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) also provide significant benefits and subsidies for importers and exporters.

What is the role of the DGFT in India's import-export?

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is the government body responsible for formulating and implementing India's foreign trade policy. Its main role is to promote Indian exports. It is the authority that issues the Importer Exporter Code (IEC), manages export incentives, and sets guidelines for international trade.
